Interdisciplinary Training

Community Scholars

Community Scholars is an on-the-job training program for young adults with disabilities who want to build career skills and explore college.
Community Scholars work alongside FCIC staff in real office roles—helping with projects, events, communications, and program support. FCIC and LAUNCH serve as approved on-the-job training (OJT) sites, in partnership with vocational rehabilitation agencies and employment providers, such as The Grow Group.
Through this paid training experience, you'll:

  • Build workplace skills like communication, time management, organization, and teamwork
  • Earn OJT wages through your vocational rehabilitation benefits while gaining professional experience
  • Get individualized support, including mentoring, career coaching, and college counseling
  • Learn about disability rights through self-advocacy and policy training
  • Explore college as a next step in your career path

Community Scholars are full members of the FCIC training community. You'll participate in many of the same professional development activities, training modules, and national networking opportunities as our graduate student trainees.

Interested in becoming a Community Scholar? If you are working with a vocational rehabilitation counselor or an employment agency, ask them about placement opportunities at FCIC or LAUNCH. You can also contact Training Director Dr. Laura Rodríguez López at lrodri11@usf.edu to learn more about the program.
